In "Motif: A Game of Music Theory" you are musicians at the prestigious Powell School of Music, learning and practicing music theory while building your repertoire of chords and pieces of music to perform in the year end recital. The student who practices the hardest, learns the most music, and is able to out perform the other musicians at the recital will earn the coveted audition slot for a chance to join the Kowalski Grand Philharmonic Orchestra! Note that no musical skill or knowledge is required to play this game.
Motif is a mid-weight Euro style worker placement game that focuses on set collection, area control and fulfilling hidden goals to achieve victory. Players have different Rehearsal Goals set for them over the tight 10 turns of the game. Each turn players must maximize the efficiency of their Note Playing (worker placement) to complete Scale cards, Chords and Melodies.
Each player starts with an affinity for one specific Instrument and a Rehearsal Goal to complete. Players are able to work on learning Chords and Melodies on their own private Rehearsal board space or compete together for Melody and Scale cards on a common central board. Whoever plays the last Note that finishes a Scale or Melody gets first choice at the reward options for that card. Some cards have 2 or 3 rewards available so the next player with the most Notes played on the card will get the next choice and so on.
Players also start with a hand of multi-use Chord cards and can gain more during the game from a central market. Chords provide strategic choices to each player.
