It's one invasion after another, sort of like Vinci (which came much later) but historical. The game begins with the Roman invasion of 43 A.D., continues through the many struggles among Angles, Saxons, Picts, Norse, Scots, Danes etc, and ends with the Norman invasion in 1066.
The game is designed and exquisitely well balanced for exactly 4 players, so please recruit a friend if sign-ups look short (I am one, so we need three sign-ups).
Each player will get a play-balanced selection of invaders spread apart in location and time. Each invasion will have its peculiar objectives (worth victory points) causing collisions with some and wary avoidance of others.
For me, the appeal of this game is its dynamism: Just when the forces on the board seem to be achieving some kind of equilibrium, a new horde (or three) will swarm upon some shore.
I'll be bringing my now-ancient and probably collectible Avalon Hill copy from 1986. It says game-time is 4 hours, but that assumes players who've been playing against each other every Friday night for months. My 6-hour window allows for teaching time, food break, and first-timer think-time.
